Paintings on copper, drawings on paper, and mixed media works on panels are all outlets that Toni Jo uses to express surreal and fantastical emotions. There is a real depth beneath the surface of Toni Jo’s works, which she believes “is a reflection on human behavior through analogies found in nature and psychology”. Allowing yourself to transcend into one of Toni Jo’s pieces is like taking a journey into a make-believe world. Toni Jo herself enters her work, often through a series, as a way to resolve something. “I seek to discern, and ultimately, accept both the beauty and cruelty that seems fundamental to our relationship with our bodies, each other, and our planet”. Her Addressing the Burden series brings to mind the encumbrances we all carry with us, and through this series, Toni explored ways encumbrances painted as physical objects can be shed by using jubilant colors and subtle images like a helpful stick figure embodying childlike nativity and intuition.
Toni Jo received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, followed by a residency at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and then earning her MFA from Maine College of Art.
Toni Jo resides and creates in Portland, Maine.
